To begin your quest for the Mace of the Explorer, you must first make your way to Eastham to talk with Olivier Rognath. A brief chat with him will reveal his worries about his friend Sir Candeth:

Olivier Rognath tells you, "If you come across any strange Banderling artifacts, please come see me at once. I am an avid Banderling hobbyist. And please, no Banderling scalps! I want to study these creatures, not kill them!"
Olivier Rognath tells you, "Hello! Have you seen my friend, Sir Martine? He has been missing for quite some time now. I had heard the Society had sent him out on a Mosswart research expedition, but I assumed he would have been back by now."
Olivier Rognath tells you, "Poor Sir Candeth. I begin to fear the worst. I wish I knew where he had been sent off to. I heard a rumor the outpost was some distance west of Sawato. But sometimes the Society can be quite secretive, you know."
Olivier Rognath tells you, "No, I am no longer quite as nimble as I once was, so I have not been able to procure an Explorer designation from the Society as yet. Sir Olivier Rognath does roll off the tongue quite nicely, though, eh? Perhaps it will happen in the future."

The town criers also have some information on Sir Candeth:

Town Crier tells you, "Sir Candeth Martine of the Dereth Exploration Society recently went into the Blackmire west of Sawato, to research the habits of Mosswarts. A funny duck, that one. Me, all I need to about Mosswarts is how to make them do that squeak when they die!"

A Battered Leather Journal
The outpost Olivier refers to is the Banderling Conquest Dungeon, which is almost due west of Sawato at 29.0s, 50.5e. Inside, quite near the entrance, you'll find a room containing a Battered Leather Journal with a description of Sir Candeth's capture by Mosswarts in his own hand. Deeper in the dungeon the tunnels give way to Empyrean ruins and you can find a Banderling Chief and his subordinates guarding the shaft of a ceremonial mace.

Banderling Mace ShaftBanderling Mace Shaft
Value: 10 p
500 burden units
A long and heavy shaft with strange markings on the side.
Combine with Mace head to make ceremonial weapon.

Once you have the shaft and the book, return to Eastham and give the Battered Journal to Olivier:

Olivier Rognath tells you, "Oh my. This is certainly distressing. But tremendously exciting. I almost envy him! To be able to observe them this closely...I, too, have never heard of Banderlings and Mosswarts coming to blows. I shall have to further ponder what this means. And I will have to forward this news on to the Society. If you come across any further word of the wherabouts of Sir Martine, I would be most desperate to learn of it."

You can also give Olivier the shaft -- he will return it:

Olivier Rognath tells you, "What a find! This is the shaft of a unique Banderling Ceremonial Weapon. They use it in many of their tribal rituals, although for unknown purposes. If you can find the head of this weapon, and then find a way to reattach the weapon, I would be most interested! Please come see me!"

The only clue to the whereabouts of Sir Candeth is from the last part of his Battered Journal: "I don't know where they are taking me, but the creeping Mosswart scouts have been moving west." A good way west of the Banderling Conquest Dungeon, and slightly north, is the Mosswart Maze at 25.2s, 19.4e.

A Dry Withered Leather Bound Journal
As the name suggests, the place is a maze. However, if you're only interested in the Mace, the first right from the main corridor is all you're interested in. If you keep left, you'll come to a room with A Dry Withered Leather Bound Journal. One thing to note in there is the description of what happeend to the Mace Head: "Apparently some of the Mosswarts had been moving the stone into the deepest caverns of the Maze when they were set upon by forces unknown and unseen. When we came across their mangled and shredded bodies the stone was nowhere to be found." You can find the head by taking the first right after taking the first right from the entrance - you'll eventually come to a misty area and two Goldenback Tuskers (presumably they are the forces unknown and unseen) guarding the Mace Head.

Banderling Mace HeadBanderling Mace Head
Value: 10 p
1000 burden units
A large and heavy stone with strange markings on the side.
Combine with Mace shaft to make ceremonial weapon.

Use the mace head on the shaft to make the Banderling Ceremonial Weapon:

You find that you are able to attach the shaft to the stone in such a way as to form an ornate though unwieldy Mace.

Banderling Ceremonial WeaponBanderling Ceremonial Weapon
Value: 10 p
1500 burden units
A large and heavy mace, seemingly too unstable to wield.

Hand this and the journal to Olivier in Eastham to claim your Mace of the Explorer.

You give Olivier Rognath A Dry Withered Leather Bound Journal
Olivier Rognath tells you, "Well, this explains everything! Well, not everything. But it is a start! I can only surmise that Sir Martine's thoughts on the matter are correct. A Banderling Ceremonial Weapon! I am most amazed. If I could get my hand on such a weapon, it would be an invaluable find! I wonder what is behind these machinations. Is it possible the Mosswarts are acting on their own? Strange are the wonders of Dereth. And whatever happened to Sir Martine? Maybe there are new clues further west. We can only hope."
You give Olivier Rognath Banderling Ceremonial Weapon
Olivier Rognath tells you, "My word, I am speechless! Well, not speechless, but certainly amazed! This is the first Banderling Ceremonial Weapon we have found intact. I must send this on to the society at once. There may even be an Explorership in it for me. But were you not able to find Sir Martine? That is unfortunate. I will pass on word of that to the Society as well. In return for this artifact, let me present to you this quality weapon. It will serve you in good stead for much of your adventuring career."
Olivier Rognath gives you Mace of the Explorer
