Nanto provides two quests for the newcomer. At the East Outpost Inou-Kon Kou has lost a book in the nearby Lytaway dungeon (52.5s 86.7e). This is an easy dungeon to navigate, but you must make your way past several skulkers to reach the exit, so do not enter if unprepared. If you head deeper into the dungeon you'll eventually find Kou's book at the end:

Inuo-Kon Kou's Book 15 p 5 bu Inuo-Kon Kou's thin and worn book on magical lights. Many Empyrean lights seeto require no maintenance. Most look like normal orange flame-based light. They can be found in dungeons throughout Dereth, as reported by explorer Alatar Locke. But lately reports have come in of fire that is blue or green. Another topic entirely is magical glows that have no fire as a source.

In return for the book you will be rewarded 2 healing potions, 200 pyreals and 500 xp. Whilst in the dungeon you may also find some broken tapers. Inuo-Kon Kou will tell you to take these the Shin Ro, the Archmage's Apprentice, in Nanto who gives 45 pyreals for each taper:

At the North Outpost, Ji Ra Ping needs a letter delivered to the same Shin Ro:

Shin Ro does have some of the water - or at least knows where to send you to get it: the Water Temple at the top of the hill above Nanto (52.1s 80.2e). You'll get a key:

The Water Temple consists of a round central room with a corridor running around. Directly opposite the point where you enter this area from the portal-in point is a door. Beyond the door the corridor splits into two and leads to three connected room. In the leftmost room is a locked chest containing a bottle of the water:

Return the water to Shin Ro for the reward of 2 healing potions, 200 pyreals and 500 xp.
