The Four Stones Quest offers little in the way of material reward, but is instead an introduction into Jojiist philosophy. Before undetaking the quest, you may wish to read On the Four Stones and Three Elders, which is available from most Sho scribes.
You can begin the quest at either of the two outposts of the Sho town of Shoushi. Although both quests can be initiated with a welcome letter, it is not a requirement. There's no requirement to start at either outpost, but I think the Eastern route provides an initally easier quest.
Upstairs at the outpost (36.6s, 75.9e) you'll find Bai Den, who collects Welcome Letters. He's also lacking a Flawed Gem
Bai Den tells you, "Welcome, welcome. Do you have a Welcome Letter? I am collecting such letters. Please give it to me. Or perhaps you have seen my flawed gem someplace?" |
If you have a Welcome Letter, Den will give you more explicit instructions to the whereabouts of the gem. For those without such an item, the Gem has been stolen by some Drudges who are living across the river in a tomb at 36.6s 77.6e. The Gem is in a chest in the tomb guarded by a couple of Drudge Skulkers and a Drudge Sneaker. More Drudges will rush to defend the tomb, but since you should be inside, only those rushing the entrance should make it in.

In a house down the road south-west of Shoushi lives Nen Ai and her pet Drudge Skulker. He's often found outside the house, and less commonly inside, whilst Ai is found upstairs.
Nen Ai tells you, "I have tended this drudge since it was very young, and he is my friend. But he is still very weak." Nen Ai tells you, "Could you get me perfectly aged Cove Apple Cider? There was some stashed in the Stone Cathedral dungeon nearby. If you have given Oi-Tong Ye the Stone of Humility, you should have been given the key." |
The Stone Cathedral is a little further up the road at 34.4s 70.4e. It's limited to levels 1-5, and although not required, it might help to have a friend come along. The locked chest isn't that far from the start: from your entry point take the only real exit from the rooms and take the first right up a slope. At the top of the slope turn left and follow the corridor through a large room with a fountain and straight out the corridor on the other side. Turn right at the end, and then the chest is in the door to the left guarded by a couple of Drudge Skulkers.

The second half of the quest starts at the Western Outpost (33.6s, 69.8e) where local collector Lou Kai has lost his Yaoji.
Lou Ka tells you, "Greetings. I am a collector of drudge charms and phyntos wasp wings. But if you are new here, I will also take your Welcome Letter." Lou Ka tells you, "Oh, and if you recover my personal yaoji, I would appreciate getting it back." |
As with Bai Den, Ka will tell you more if you have a welcome letter. Otherwise head west to 33.4s 68.0e where a small cave contains the Yaoji guarded by several Skulkers and a Sneaker.

Back in Shoushi, Oi-Tong Ye will supply you with a key for a chest in the nearby Shreth Hive.
You give Oi-Tong Ye Stone of Discipline. Oi-Tong Ye tells you, "You helped Lou Ka, in the West Outpost! Well done. Here is a key to help you find the Stone of Detachment. There is a dungeon called the Shreth Hive west past the portal to Nanto." Oi-Tong Ye tells you, "The barkeep will sell directions on how to find the portal to Nanto." Oi-Tong Ye gives you Oi-Tong Ye's Key. |
 Oi-Tong's Key
|
A strangely shaped jade key, glowing slightly. Value: 3p 50 Burden Units
|
The Shreth Hive is found at 32.5s 71.0e and is limited to levels 1-5. I recommend talking at least one friend along for the ride. More if possible as you'll encounter multiple Drudges and Gnawer Shreths as well as three Carrion Shreths. Be careful on entering as the Drudges drop from above and even a Drudge Skulker can do over 20 points of damage if it lands on you.
Inside, drop into the central area (once you do, there is no turning back) and take the centre corridor that heads down. This will take you into a maze of rooms. Hug the wall to the left and follow it around until it takes you into a larger room with two ramps up. There are a couple of chests here that might contain useful items.
Take either ramp and head along the corridor as it goes down and around the main chamber. If you have someone with a ranged attack, it may pay to snipe off a few of the Shreths in the chamber, but don't take too long or they'll respawn.
Following the corridor around will eventually bring you to the floor of the chamber. Unless you want them following you down, clear out the Shreths (mainly Gnawers, but one Carrion may appear). Take the slope down from the centre of the chamber. At the bottom of the split slope will be four chests and two Carrion Shreths. One chest is locked, and requires Oi-Tong's Key to obtain the Stone of Detachment. The exit is nearby.
