This quest starts in Yanshi at either outpost. For the
purposes of this guide, we will assume the player starts at the North Outpost
and speaks with Lou Ei, the Collector on the second floor of the house at the
outpost.
Lou Ei the Collector tells you, “Greetings. If you are a newcomer, I have
a small task for you. If you succeed, I shall reward you.”
Lou Ei the Collector tells you, “Nearby, just to the east and in a stand of
trees, is a small cave infested with drudges. They’ve stolen my favorite
bracelet. If you recover it for me, I’ll give you a reward.”
The cave is almost directly east as she said (9.8S 48.0E) – outside however I
had to inch carefully around a Broken Fragment to reach the cave entrance
without attracting its attention. One Drudge Skulker was outside and two Drudge
Skulkers inside. Lou Ei’s bracelet is in an unlocked chest to the back of the
cave, near a patch of straw. Pick it up and take it back to her for the
‘reward’. (The bracelet itself is worth merely 20 pyreals.)
 |
Once you have given her the bracelet, she’ll give you the reward of a further
task: taking a set of Writings to Dai Ya the Scholar who is clearly unsurprised
to receive it.
Lou Ei the Collector tells you, “Wonderful! As a reward, Scholar Dai Ya
in town might be interested in this piece of writing.”
Lou Ei the Collector gives you Writings.

Dai Ya is in the Tavern tent at approximately 10.6 S 46.3E. Talk to him and he
will tell you:
Dai Ya the Scholar tells you, “Hello, I am a collector of the writings of
Jhong Mi, who was a philosopher who wrote his own interpretations of the
teachings of Jojii. If you find any of his writings, please give them to me, and
I will reward you. You might start by talking to Lou Ei at the North Outpost, or
Te Ven at the South Outpost.”
Dai Ya the Scholar tells you, “Also, I have been contracted by the Dereth
Exploration Society to help them in their outreach program towards the Isparians
who find themselves newly exiled in Dereth. Here is a book that explains their
mission. I am also giving you a list describing the locations of the nearest
stamp and portals to other towns. If you collect any of the Society’s stamped
letters, you may bring them back to me for a reward.”
Dai Ya the Scholar gives you A Book of Quests for New
Explorers.
Dai Ya the Scholar gives you Yanshi Information Guide.
Give him the Writings and he will tell you:
Dai Ya the Scholar tells you, “Copies of this seem to come in often. Ah,
well. There are other writings by Jhong Mi in dungeons near Yanshi; if you find
any, bring them to me.”
Dai Ya the Scholar gives you 200 Pyreals.
Dai Ya the Scholar gives you 2 Potions of Healing.
You’ve earned 2500 experience.
Take note of that plural “in dungeons near Yanshi”, you’ll be visiting
two of them. (The order is not important to fulfilling the quest however.)
Part One - Deserted Ruin
The first dungeon is the Deserted Ruin at 16.S 47.2E (restricted to levels
1-20); the location of the Yanshi town stamp as well as Jhong Mi’s Writings.
AC Maps: Desert Ruin
The Deserted Ruin is not far from the South Outpost, so you may as well stop and
speak with Te Ven the Collector who gives you a Key used in this quest. This is
a good point to lifestone as well, though the North Outpost may be preferable as
its lifestone is somewhat closer to Dai Ya (and thus the turning in of the
Writings).
Te Ven the Collector tells you, “Greetings.”
Te Ven the Collector tells you, “Nearby, hidden amidst the swamp trees to
the east is the deserted ruin where some lived before Yanshi was founded. Follow
the gaze of the statues.”
Te Ven the Collector tells you, “Unless you have lockpicking or a friend
who has the skill, you will need this key once inside. If you recover one of the
writings of Jhong Mi and take it to the Scholar Dai Ya in Yanshi, he will reward
you and give you more information.”
Te Ven the Collector gives you Te Ven’s Key.
With the spawn redistribution, the spawn near and on the way to the portal can
be very active. I ran into (and from) Swamp Gromnies (12), Blue Phyntos (9),
Creeper Mosswarts (7), and a Zombie (14). The safest route is to head almost
directly east from the South Outpost.
Once inside the Deserted Ruin, head east to the first intersection. At the
intersection take a right (south) and go down. There are two Drudge Skulkers (4)
in the room beyond. Follow the only door out of the room, on the east side and
into the corridor beyond. Follow the corridor around to the south and back east
til you get to a Y junction. Two Drudge Slinkers (5) from the room to the east
will probably attack you here. Take the left-hand path, the angled corridor
heading northeast. The corridor straightens almost immediately back to the
north. You’ll pass a short corridor on the east and a room. Ignore the room and
keep going into the room at the end of the north corridor.
Inside this large room, immediately head for the east exit (the only other way
out of the room except back the way you came.) Past an S curved corridor is
another room, diamond shaped, with three drudges in it. Two Drudge Skulkers and
a Drudge Sneaker are in this room.
Again head east, the first short corridor on the left (north) side is for the
room with Jhong Mi’s Writings. The door is locked. Either use Te Ven’s Key on
the door, or if you have lockpicking (approximately 80), pick it. A Drudge
Slinker guards the chest with the Writings. Kill it and pick up the Writings.
“Listen to the sound of the falling leaves
Slipping quietly to the beds below
They fear nothing and make no cry
Why do we resist death so much?
We will just be returning
To where we have been growing toward
And we will find rest at last.
Listen to the sound of falling leaves.”
Before you backtrack out, two things should be noted: one is, if you head out of
the locked room, and continue east, the corridor ends in a set of two rooms.
There’s an unlocked chest in this room (which was empty) but before the chest
between the four stones on the ground be careful! There’s a simple magic trap
which casts Slowness I on you. Avoid this room, and head down the stairs
instead. The second thing to be noted: there’s an unlocked chest in the bottom
level with some fairly decent loot for the 1-20 level range of this dungeon. Two
Drudge Skulkers and one Drudge Slinker guard this chest.
Return the Writings to Dai Ya for your reward.
You give Dai Ya the Scholar Writings.
Dai Ya the Scholar tells you, "Ah, Thank you. A fine example of Jhong
Mi's writing. There are others in the dungeons near Yanshi too."
Dai Ya the Scholar gives you 200 Pyreals.
Dai Ya the Scholar gives you 2 Potions of Healing.
You've earned 2500 experience.
Part Two - Reedshark Lair
The second (or third, really) part of the quest will take you to the Reedshark
Lair at 12.3S 48.3E, again nearer the South Outpost. This dungeon is restricted
to level 5+.
AC Maps: Reedshark Liar
The portal drop off point is in a large odd shaped room – just follow it around
to the other side, but watch out for two Spiny Armoredillos (5). If you look to
the southern end of the room, you’ll see a corridor above this floor, take note
of that. That’ll be where you’re coming out when leaving.
After killing the two Spiny Armoredillos, head north (the only way to go) and
follow the corridor you come to. That corridor runs Northeast and stops at a T
intersection. To the left (west) is an empty room with a Red Phyntos Wasp (5);
there is also another Red Phyntos Wasp to the east, past an empty room. You want
to follow the eastern corridor. It’ll lead around south east to another large
room with a lot of orange dots. However, three of them are behind a locked room*
so you only need to worry about the Reedshark Pup (5) that’s right there when
you first enter the room. The trick to getting through this room is to follow
the left wall. If you take the wrong passage, however, you’ll simply end up
going around in a circle and back into this same room.
Just past the locked room, as you head north, is another Reedshark Pup, if
you’re not quick enough to kill it, sometimes the other one from the upper
section of the room comes down as well. Keep heading left after you kill it –
when you see two Red Phyntos Wasps, you’re heading the right way. The two Wasps
are in front of an open doorway leading into a room with three altar type
affairs. Kill the Wasps and head through the room, to the ramp going up, on the
north side of the room. Follow the ramp and the corridor around.
After the corridor stops you’ll come to a closed grate, behind which is another
oblong room and two more Red Phyntos Wasps. Head through the room and into the
corridor beyond – you’ll be going southeast. The corridor dumps into a set of
two rooms (directly above the locked room you past below). After you deal with
the Reedshark Pup in the first room, go through the open doorway to the second
room. In the second room is a chest, with a low table covered with a couple
books just to the left of it – this is the chest with the Writings. Open the
unlocked chest and pick up the Writings.
These are more of a gloomy sort:
“The hastily rushing to and fro, to fight, pry,
claim, and steal
This land called Dereth, where so many perish
in the daily strife…
Why have we been brought, to such a place of
discord
Where even”
After you pick up the Writings, head through the room to the east exit. Follow
that corridor as it wends around to the southwest. After a jog, there’ll be
another of the oblong shaped rooms with two Red Phyntos Wasps in it. Continue
through that room to the corridor beyond. You’ll pass a barrel in the corridor,
so you’ll know you’re going the right direction.
This corridor lets out into another oblong shaped room with a single Adult
Reedshark (12) in it, standing as it happens on a pile of bones. Usually it’s
facing away from you so you should be able to get the first whack or two at it.
(*note* on Leafcull, it was in the corner nearest the entrance and attacked me
immediately.) After you kill it, go through the room and into the corridor. This
is the corridor that you saw at the entrance to the dungeon. Jump down at the
end of it (be prepared for about 4 to 5 points minor impact damage.)
If you don’t want to fight the Spiny Armoredillos again, you can run past them
to the right and back to the portal drop off, which also contains the exit
portal.
Take the Writings back to Dai Ya and he tells you:
You give Dai Ya the Scholar the Writings.
Dai Ya tells you, “A work that shows Jhong Mi’s dissatisfaction.
Fascinating.”
Dai Ya the Scholar gives you 200 Pyreals.
Dai Ya the Scholar gives you 2 Potions of Healing.
You’ve earned 2500 experience.
Since he doesn’t say there are more writings in the dungeons near Yanshi, I
believe there are only the two. If anyone knows otherwise I’d love to hear it! I
have checked A Ruin (13.0S 47.3E) and the Abandoned Arena (11.3S,37.5E) as well
as these two and found nothing.
*A note on the locked room: there is no key that I could find anywhere to open
this door. However, the door is Resistance 82 and was fairly easy to pick with
my 80 lockpicking. The chest inside contained nothing much of value. (A gem and
a healing kit were what I found in it.)
